Crane Flies Wednesday, January 17, 2007 |
From the insect identifier...
"Congratulations. If your specimen has only one set of wings, then it has to be a Diptera. This order includes the true flies, crane flies, midges, and mosquitoes. These insects have one pair of membranous wings. Their hind wings are modified to form halteres. They have sucking mouthparts, usually forming a proboscis, that are sometimes adapted for piercing. Ouch! "
And of course, these are crane flies... And they have some really weird alias names as well. Beat these!
"daddy longlegs, mosquito hawks, mosquito eaters (or skeeter eaters), gallinippers, and jimmy spinners!"
From the names, you can tell they have really long slender legs!
Pictures courtesy of dom since i didn't take these... Super Clear Pics! Kudos!
